Stay Safe & Have Fun: PaddleboardiNg at Sea with Surfnpaddle Cascais
Spring is here, and the ocean is calling! If you haven’t been on your paddleboard since last summer, now’s the perfect time to get back on the water—but with a little extra care. Before you jump straight in, let’s talk about a few key safety tips to make sure your paddle sessions are as fun and stress-free as possible.
1. Shake Off the Winter Rust!
Haven’t paddled in a while? No worries! Just take it easy at first. Your balance and paddling muscles might need a little warm-up. Start with a short session in calm waters before heading out on bigger adventures.
2. Give Your Gear a Quick Check-Up
Your board, paddle, and safety gear have been sitting for months—let’s make sure they’re still in top shape!
✔ Leash: No cracks or weak spots? It’s your lifeline in the water.
✔ Paddle: Check that it’s not loose or damaged.
✔ Board: Inflate it fully and make sure there are no leaks.
✔ Personal Flotation Device (PFD): If you use one, make sure it fits properly and is in good condition.
3. Know the Weather & Sea Conditions
Before heading out, take a quick look at the wind, tides, and waves. Offshore winds (blowing away from the shore) can make paddling back really difficult—so always check before launching. Apps like Windy, Magicseaweed and Windguru can help!
4. Dress for the Water, Not the Air
It might feel warm on the beach, but the water can still be chilly! A wetsuit or thermal top can keep you comfortable and safe from the cold. And don’t forget sunscreen—yes, even in spring!

5. Safety Gear = More Fun, Less Worry
✔ Leash – Always wear it! It keeps your board close if you fall off.
✔ PFD (Personal Flotation Device) – A must-have for open water adventures.
✔ Whistle & Waterproof Phone Case – Just in case you need to call for help.
6. Paddle Smart & Stay Aware
Start your season with shorter, easier paddles to build confidence.
Avoid paddling alone, or at least tell someone your plan.
Keep an eye on boats, swimmers, and other water users.
